Types of Drug and Alcohol Rehab

Drug and alcohol rehab are terms used to refer to professional institutions that help addicts overcome their dependency
on psychoactive drugs, alcohol and prescription drugs through a series of processes that involve medical and
psychotherapeutic treatment. The general purpose of these kinds of institutions is to control the substance
or alcohol abuse before the problem gets worse.
Alcohol and substance abuse are two of the worst problems in the society. In most cases, people
who are addicted to drugs and alcohol don’t know they have a problem. Those who do know don’t completely
realize the extent of their addiction. It is up to family members and close friends to help stop the problem.
Before an addict is taken to a drug and alcohol rehab, he must first realize that he has a problem. This
realization will help the addict overcome the problem faster as the first step to recovery is accepting that
the addiction exists. It is not advisable to force an addict to seek professional help without realizing the
extent of his addiction. Those who go to rehab without realizing how badly dependent they are on the
substance they are using tend to relapse just a few weeks out of rehab.
In drug and alcohol rehab, professionals address the psychological dependency of addicts through
a series of rehabilitation programs that attempt to teach them other ways of interacting in a drug free
environment. They are required to stay away from their friends who use drugs and other addicting substances.
In most rehabilitation centres, a twelve-step program is employed to help the addict overcome the addiction.
The twelve step program encourages those who have substance abuse problems to stop using alcohol and drugs
and to examine and change the habits that are related to their addiction. They are usually asked to divert
their attention to something else.
There are various types of treatments employed in drug
and alcohol rehab, and these include:
· Residential Treatment. This type of treatment involves confining an addict to a professional
institution to help overcome his addiction. The addict cannot leave the institution until he has completely
overcome his substance abuse problem.
· Out-patient treatments. This type of treatment requires the addict to attend a session with a
drug abuse counsellor, a certain number of times a week.
· Local support groups. In this type of treatment, the patient is asked to attend a meeting with
other addicts where they all share their experiences with substance abuse. Those who have overcome their
addiction also come to share how their experiences affected their lives.
· Extended care centres and recovery houses are also venues for addicts to overcome their
addiction.
Perhaps the most common type
of drug and alcohol rehab employed
by most addicts is residential treatment, as this is found most effective. Since they are confined in a drug free
environment, they cannot get a hold of any alcoholic or drug substances that may possibly worsen their addiction.
All the other methods can be effective as well if done the right way.
